Nick was one of at least three children; two sisters also emigrated to America.
He was born in Prussia, or possibly Alsace-Lorraine. His parentage is unknown: the death certificate of his sister, Eva Loch, lists Nicholas Bauer as her father, but no other information has been found to confirm this.
Nick emigrated in October 1868; the voyage is said to have taken six weeks.
He made his declaration of intention to become a US citizen on 1 November 1872, and was naturalized on 3 November 1887.
Nick married Catharina (Kate) Gerten on 11 April 1874 at St. Mary's in Sandusky, Erie County, Ohio.
Between 1875 and 1896, Nick and Kate had nine children, including Anna Eve Bauer.
He and his family lived in Amboy Township, Fulton County, where he worked as a farmer.
Nick "Bowers" died at age 63 from a ruptured appendix, and was buried on 23 August 1906 in St. Mary's cemetery in Assumption, Ohio.
