Johannes was the second of five children of Peter Gillen and Johanna Jung of Bliesen. The coat of arms of the village is shown here.

Johannes married Elisabeth Wagner on 12 (civil registration) or 18 (church registration) February 1841 in Wallesweilerhof.

Between 1842 and 1857, Johannes and Elisabeth had eight children, including Peter J. Gillen.

Johannes died at age 87.
