Johannes was the eldest of seven children of Wendelin Gillen and Anna Knüppel. He was born in Heisterberg.
He worked as a farmer.
Johannes married Anna Margaretha Klemm on 25 February 1781 in Wolfersweiler. The picture shows the coat of arms of the village.
Johannes and Anna had three children, including Johannes Gillen.
