Sebastian was the son of Lorenz Bertele, who lived in Wolfzennen. Both Sebastian and his father were bonded serfs of Meersburg (ruled by the bishop of Konstanz), and they held a partially inheritable fief in Wolfzennen.
The fief consisted of a house, yard, baking oven, herb garden, hemp land, meadow, orchard, and crop fields. The non-inheritable part of the fief consisted of two fields and a fishing ground on the Schussen river.
Sebastian married Maria Mosagger (possibly Mosackher) on 7 July 1697 in Langenargen. The coat of arms of the town is shown here. Maria was born in Eschach, which is probably now Obereschach.
In 1699 and 1702, Sebastian and Maria had two children:
After Maria's death, Sebastian remarried to Ann Ginthär on 31 May 1704 in Langenargen.
Between 1705 and 1716, Sebastian and Ann had seven children, including Jacob Bertele.
