Margaret Bartley

Margaret was the eldest of nine surviving children of Johann Deppman and Cunigunda Zenk. (Her death certificate and tombstone indicate 1848 as the year of her birth, but the Bamberg archive lists 1849.) The picture shown here is from a tintype taken about 1875.

At the age of 21, Margaret emigrated with seven of her brothers and sisters. They were passengers on the British steamship Abyssinia, which departed Liverpool on 13 September 1870. The ship stopped at Queenstown on the 14th, and was off Bardsey Island on the 15th. There were 648 passengers on its voyage across the Atlantic. The ship arrived at New York City on 24 September 1870.

Margaret was the second wife of Gebhard Bartley, whom she married on 12 June 1873 at St. Mary's in Toledo, Ohio.

Between 1874 and 1891, Gebhard and Margaret had ten children:

  1. Anna (19 Apr 1874 - 20 Apr 1876)
She died at the age of two.
  2. Michael (8 Sep 1876 - 10 Jan 1940)
He was unmarried, and worked as a laborer.
  3. Joseph (13 May 1878 - 9 Aug 1878)
    He died in infancy.
  4. Elizabeth Agatha (4 Feb 1879 - 25 Jul 1964)
She married John Stahl (d. circa 1913)
  5. Agatha Johanna (Agnes) (5 Nov 1880 - 7 Aug 1938)
She married Bernard (Barney) Noe (1875-1942)
  6. Joseph Leo (10 Oct 1882 - 10 Jul 1934)
He married Marie Margaret O'Connell (1886-1979)
He worked as a coffee salesman for Harnit & Hewitt Co. wholesale grocers.
Joseph committed suicide by taking poison at the entrance of St. Mary's cemetery in Toledo.
  7. George (5 Jan 1884 - 2 Mar 1890)
He died at the age of six.
  8. Rose M. (30 Apr 1887 - 15 Nov 1974)
She married Augustus Reynard Kiefer (1877-1949)
  9. Peter F. (25 Jan 1889 - 4 Nov 1925)
    He married Florence Russell.
    Peter worked as a cashier.
  10. George (20 Feb 1891 - 4 Oct 1952)
    He was unmarried.

At some point, Margaret was declared a "lunatic," and committed to the Toledo State Hospital. (Two of her sons, Michael and George, were also inmates at this hospital, and died there.) In November 1919, following the death of Gebhard, her son Peter applied for guardianship, and this was granted the following month. In March 1920, Margaret applied for a widow's pension, based upon her husband's service in the Civil War. In January 1926, following Peter's death, his widow Florence applied for, and was granted, guardianship of Margaret.

Margaret died at age 77 from arteriosclerosis, and was buried on 7 April 1926 in St. Mary's cemetery (later, part of Mt. Carmel) in Toledo. The tombstone that marks her grave, as well as her husband's and mother-in-law's, can be seen here.
